The lake’s little library has aroused interest in science among young people.
Every Wednesday at noon, the Lake Library at Lake View Park in Lorraine hosts Story Time or a variety of interactive activities without registration.
On July 21, young people and children built a model water filtration system using PET bottles and various filter media.
The young people then tested the filtration system using Lake Erie water and observed how different materials could be used in different orders to improve or reduce results.
“We are teaching them some basics of science and technology here,” said Outreach Service Manager Nick Kronin. “They are learning not only about the water they drink at home, but also about the quality of the lake and how to improve it.”
According to Kronin, the library is incorporating more science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) into its activities.
“We want to teach our children basic scientific concepts that we find interesting,” he said. “It is important that they are exposed to STEM as they grow up.”
The model water filtration system is not the only STEM concept that Lorraine residents can expect from a library.
The Lorain Public Library System will distribute 50 free science kits from the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) during the PV Craft Program on August 4th.
The program runs from noon to 1 pm in the small library on the lake.
COSI’s “Leaning Lunchboxes” was built in collaboration with NASA and is full of five days of hands-on scientific activity for K-8 grade children.
“We know that the pandemic has created educational disparities for many students,” said Michelle Francis, Executive Director of the Ohio Library Council. “We are excited to work with COSI this summer to make science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning opportunities accessible to young people in Ohio.”
One science kit for each family on a first-come, first-served basis, which will end as soon as it is out of stock.
