New health food store in Flint area aims to offer a ‘holistic approach’ to healt…

FLINT TOWNSHIP, MI — A new health food store in Genesee County opened this week with many options for supplements and vitamins, healthy pre-made meals and its owners have a mission to offer a full spectrum of healthcare.

Hope Health Food Store, G3310 Beecher Road, in Flint Township, held a soft opening on Monday, Jan. 17.

The store offers plant-based products, plant-based grab-and-go meals prepared by local chef Antwain Trimble, artisan breads and a plethora of supplements, vitamins and herbs.

Customers can also sign up for a free consultation to talk about their needs and businesses and schools can book the business for health presentations.

“We’re new to the area, we’re acclimating to the community, because every community demands different things and it depends on the clientele,” co-owner Dr. Joseph McCall, a chiropractor and nurse, told MLive-The Flint Journal.

The business is co-owned by Joseph’s wife, Angela McCall.

In addition to the product offerings, the health food store also plans to host presentations on gut health, heart health and other health related topics pertinent to the local community.

“My heart and soul is in healthcare, my heart and soul is in being a benefit to help other people and as long as I’ve been in healthcare I believe in offering people their full spectrum of what their opportunities are when it comes to healthcare,” Joseph McCall said.

Communication and preventive healthcare are both important components of full spectrum healthcare, he added.

Joseph McCall also holds a post-doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine.

The chiropractor’s clinic, Hope Chiropractic & Wellness, is located next to the health food store.

“The chiropractic clinic and the health food store, they’re connected in many ways to offer a holistic approach to health,” Angela McCall said.

Joseph McCall’s passion for helping people through healthcare began when he was a child.

His mother and father would take him and his siblings to nursing homes after church to volunteer, sing and pray.

“It was there that I saw that I wanted to make a change in healthcare,” Joseph McCall said. “I saw abuse. I saw neglect, I saw a lot of things and even as a child it touched my heart so heavily that I wanted to make a change. My whole life I have been driven to become something better.”

Joseph McCall pointed to how residents of Flint have endured some neglect, referring to the water crisis, poverty and food desert among other hurdles.

“That’s unacceptable,” Joseph McCall said frankly. “As an African American man, unfortunately I take offense to that because my whole life I’ve had that same experience because of who I am. I can’t be thrown to the wayside.”

The mission of the health food store is to empower people to make a difference in the community, he continued.

Hours of operation for the store are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays.
