Spring is in the air, and so is the spirit of water conservation! This April, Water – Use It Wisely is gearing up for several exciting events that highlight the importance of water-saving efforts. A variety of activities – from Water Awareness Month to Earth Day to Arbor Day – means that there are plenty of opportunities to have fun while doing your part to save water.

Arizona Water Awareness Month (April 1st – 30th)

April is Arizona Water Awareness Month, a time to get creative and show your love for water! Whether you are just starting your water conservation journey or already an expert water saver, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate Water Awareness Month. Here are some of our favorite and easy ways to celebrate:

Take shorter showers: Set a goal to keep your shower under 5 minutes. You’ll save water and energy and have more time to enjoy the day!

Fix leaks: Check for leaks in your home, such as dripping faucets or running toilets. A leaky faucet can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water per year, so fixing them as soon as possible is essential.

Go meatless: Meat production requires a lot of water, so try going meatless for one day a week. You’ll not only save water but also reduce your carbon footprint.

Attend the first annual Water Awareness Festival hosted by the Arizona Department of Water Resources. It will be a day of fun activities, food, and 25+ organizations with information on water conservation. In fact, Wayne Drop, our Water – Use It Wisely mascot, will be there!

Spread the word: Follow @wateruseitwisely on social media (@wuiw on Twitter) or sign up for our monthly newsletter and share your water-saving tips and tricks with friends and family!

Earth Day (April 22nd)

Earth Day is a day to celebrate our planet and all of its natural wonders, including the most precious resource of all, water. Water conservation is a crucial part of Earth Day, as it plays a vital role in protecting our planet’s ecosystems and preserving our finite water resources.

Looking to celebrate? Check out these events around Arizona:

Arbor Day (April 28th)

Arbor Day is a day to show some love to the trees in your community and their vital role in our community and water conservation. Planting trees is a fun and rewarding way to positively impact the environment, especially when you choose trees that fit the environment around you. Here in Arizona, we recommend selecting desert-adapted trees that are water thrifty. This helps conserve water and enrich the environment. Here are our favorites! Once you’ve selected your tree and you’re ready to plant, follow our Planting Trees and Shrubs guidelines.

Wyland National Mayor's ChallengeNational Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation (April 1st – 30th)

The National Mayor’s Challenge is a month-long event that challenges whole cities to become more water-wise. Every year, mayors nationwide will challenge their residents to conserve water, energy, and other natural resources on behalf of their city. Last year over 2,000 cities participated (and competed for the most pledges per capita), and a billion gallons of water were saved. Interested in participating this year? From April 1-10, you can take the pledge!

Get Ready for April!

As our rainy and cool March winds down, get ready for April! It’s the perfect time to get in the water-wise spirit and join the fun with these exciting water-saving events. Whether you’re getting creative with Water Awareness Month, attending an Earth Day event, planting a tree for Arbor Day, or participating in the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, there are plenty of ways to get involved and positively impact the environment. So, let’s get out there, have some fun, and make a splash for water conservation!
